Notifications Piling Up Like Junk Mail?

ServiceNow is built to deliver insight. But here’s the uncomfortable truth: most people ignore it.

Notifications pile up like junk mail. Dashboards multiply like rabbits until nobody knows which one to trust. What started as a platform meant to bring clarity ends up looking a lot like noise.

The issue isn’t ServiceNow. The issue is governance.

Governance isn’t just about approvals or steering committees. It’s about making sure your platform is intentional:

  • Notifications go only to the people who can act on them.
  • Dashboards highlight outcomes, not vanity metrics.
  • Users know what to read, where to go, and why it matters.

When governance is weak, you get bloat: too many alerts, too many charts, too many “just in case” reports. And when everything looks urgent, nothing gets attention.

Here’s the test: if unread notifications are piling up, and if your team is unsure which dashboard is the “source of truth,” that’s not an adoption problem. It’s a governance problem.

To start turning the tide, ask three simple questions before you build another alert or dashboard:

  1. Who really needs this?
  2. What action should it drive?
  3. Does it add clarity or just more noise?

Because at the end of the day, ServiceNow isn’t about how many messages or dashboards you can generate. It’s about how many decisions and actions it enables. And that only happens when governance turns down the volume and turns up the value.
