Upgrading to Zurich? Here’s Why You Need to Review Your Google API Integrations

As part of the ServiceNow Zurich release, customers using Google Maps integrations (used frequently within FSM implementations in particular) need to be aware of a critical change that affects functionality. Google has announced that its Places API, Directions API, and Distance Matrix API will be classified as Legacy services. These will be replaced by Places API (New) and Routes API.

If you're upgrading to Zurich and rely on Google Maps for location services, routing, or distance calculations, this change directly impacts you.  To maintain functionality once you have upgraded to Zurich, you must:

  • Enable the new APIs (Places API (New) and Routes API) in your Google Cloud Console.
  • Update any custom scripts or integrations that reference the legacy endpoints.

If you have not yet upgraded to Zurich, you must be aware of the following:

  • Any new Google API keys created after March 2025 will not work with the legacy APIs.

Failing to make these updates could result in broken API calls, degraded user experience, and service disruptions.

What you should do now:

  • Audit your current Google Maps API usage in ServiceNow.
  • Plan your upgrade to Zurich with API compatibility in mind.
  • Coordinate with your technical teams to enable and test the new APIs.

This isn’t just a backend change—it’s a necessary step to ensure your ServiceNow Zurich upgrade goes smoothly and your location-based services continue to operate reliably. Please reach out to Crossfuze if you need any support with this migration.

Effective March 1, 2025, Google has designated the Places API, Directions API, and Distance Matrix API as Legacy services. The newer versions of these services are Places API (New) and Routes API. You can’t generate new API keys for these legacy services. However, you can continue using these services with the existing API keys. If you create a Google API key after March 2025, you must upgrade to a supported ServiceNow release version to verify compatibility.
